VIDEO: Comedian Masatoshi Hamada Spoofs Kawaii Idol Culture with Debut Single

Masatoshi Hamada, one half of the popular Japanese comic duo Downtown, is spoofing kawaii idol culture with the December 16, 2015, release of his debut idol single, “Nandeyanennen”. Performing as Hamada Bamyu Bamyu (a riff on singer Kyary Pamyu Pamyu), the musical act grew out of a skit on the TV variety show Downtown no Gaki no Tsukai ya Arahende!! which proved so popular that Hamada was offered a record deal.

This isn’t Hamada’s first foray into the musical world. Hamada was also part of the musical group ‘H Jungle with a t’ in the 1990’s. Most interestingly, both ambassador of kawaii culture Sebastian Masuda and producer Yasutaka Nakata – who also work with Kyary Pamyu Pamyu – are involved in producing the Hamada Bamyu Bamyu act.
