The cast of the Golden Kamuy, an upcoming TV anime based on the seinen adventure manga about rival groups of scoundrels hunting for a hidden cache of Ainu gold, continues to grow, and this time new voice actors have been announced for a trio of slightly deranged soldiers for the 7th division of the Imperial Japanese Army. The new cast members include:
Hōchū Ōtsuka as Lieutenant Tsurumi, a rebellious officer who plans to use the Ainu gold as war-capital to institute a military coup to take over Hokkaido. Lieutenant Tsurumi wears a metal plate on his forehead to cover a severe wound that he received from an artillery bombardment during the Russo-Japanese War.
Kenjiro Tsuda as Hyakunosuke Ogata, an elite soldier and master marksman who is capable of slaying enemies at a range of 300 meters with a single shot from his rifle.
And Yoshimasa Hosoya as Genjiro Tanigaki, a soldier from the Matagi clan of the Tohoku region who is an experienced mountaineer and hunter.
The original Golden Kamuy manga is published by Shueisha in their Weekly Young Jump seinen manga magazine, and an English language version is also available from Viz Media, who describe the story as follows:
In the early twentieth century, Russo-Japanese War veteran Saichi “Immortal” Sugimoto scratches out a meager existence during the postwar gold rush in the wilderness of Hokkaido. When he stumbles across a map to a fortune in hidden Ainu gold, he sets off on a treacherous quest to find it. But Sugimoto is not the only interested party, and everyone who knows about the gold will kill to possess it! Faced with the harsh conditions of the northern wilderness, ruthless criminals and rogue Japanese soldiers, Sugimoto will need all his skills and luck—and the help of an Ainu girl named Asirpa—to survive.
The Golden Kamuy TV anime is directed by Hitoshi Nanba and features animation by Geno Studio. It will begin broadcasting in April of 2018 on Tokyo MX, Yomiuri Telecasting Corporation, Sapporo Television Broadcasting, and BS11. Golden Kamuy will also be digitally distributed on the Fuji On Demand streaming service.
