Takahiro Sakurai To Lead Japanese Dub Of “Roots”

Plans have been announced for a History Channel Japan broadcast of the 2016 adaptation of Alex Haley’s classic multi-generation family history Roots this August. Takahiro Sakurai (OsomatsuBerserk’s Griffith) has been announced as the voice of Kunta Kinte, a Mandinka youth brought to America as a slave. 


Shuichi Ikeda (Gundam’s Char), who voiced the role in the Japanese dub of the 1977 adaptation, voices his father, Omoro Kinte. Daisuke Namikawa (Hyou in Ushio and Tora, Hisoka in Hunter x Hunter) is the voice of Chicken George and Naoya Uchida (Naruto’s Madara Uchiha) is Tom Lea.

The four-part mini-series, starring Malachi Kirby, Forest Whitaker, Anna Paquin, Laurence Fishburne, Jonathan Rhys Myers, Anika Noni Rose, and T.I. premiered in the US on Memorial Day, May 30, 2016.
