“Super Mario Maker” Update Adds Mid-Level Checkpoints, New Courses

If you’ve been patiently waiting for new stuff to work with in Super Mario Maker, Nintendo has a big update on the way. Due out on November 4, the free update will add the ability to place mid-level checkpoints, as well as Course World categories that highlight new levels by Nintendo and partner creators.

The mid-level checkpoints can be added to new levels and edited into old ones for re-uploading. You can find the checkpoint flag by shaking an arrow sign item from the course parts palette.

Players will also be able to insert power-ups that are dependent on Mario’s current status. Attach a Super Mushroom to a Fire Flower and place it in a block, for instance, and he’ll get the Mushroom when he’s small and the Fire Flower when he’s big.

The new Course World categories will allow for Event Courses, with one of the first being the “hackathon” event-winning course “Ship Love.” The event took place at Facebook’s headquarters in Menlo Park earlier this year, making Facebook the first outside partner in the U.S. to design a Super Mario Maker level.

Shortly after the update goes live, the level featured in the final round of Penny Arcade Expo’s Omegathon event will also be available to play. New Event Courses will be added on a regular basis after these.
