Each week Star Wars Spotlight combs through the digital archives of Marvel Unlimited to showcase one classic story from that distant galaxy filled with Jedi, Sith, princesses, scoundrels and droids.
Last time, we spotlighted the second volume of STAR WARS LEGACY which re-introduced us to the Yuuzhan Vong, a race seemingly dedicated to the complete eradication of other worlds so that they could thrive. Now, with STAR WARS INVASION #0-5 by Tom Taylor and Colin Wilson, it’s time to look at their first major offensive against the galaxy and how Luke Skywalker, Princess Leia, Han Solo, and the budding Jedi Order responded.
As the series kicked off roughly 25 years after the Battle of Yavin, the Yuuzhan Vong attacked a planet called Artorias. They assumed that their victory would be simple and swift, but it proved far from that as the royal Galfridian family of King Caled, Queen Nina, Princess Kaye, and Prince Finn survived to cause trouble in a variety of ways.
While the Vong captured Nina and Kaye, Luke Skywalker took Finn under his wing to train him in the ways of the Jedi while Caled remained behind, seemingly sacrificing himself in the process.
Finn returned with Skywalker to train on Yavin-4 where he met Han and Leia’s three children: Jaina, Jacen, and Anakin. There, the young man quickly impressed Jedi Masters Luke and Le’Ung with his abilities and agreed to let him come along on a journey to save as many people as possible on Rychel. As one Jedi died, Finn took up his lightsaber and fought successfully, even showing Tsalok mercy instead of killing him on the spot.
At the same time, Kaye used her captor’s interest in her to figure out a way to lead a revolt of her fellow slaves with the assistance of Arbeloa, one of the first people to encounter the Yuuzhan Vong. With the Rychel mission finished, Finn flew out with Leia, Jacen, Jaina, Anakin, and Lowbacca to find a smuggler on Nar Shaddaa who claimed to have information on all of the Yuuzhan Vong hiding on various planets in the guise of natives.
By the end of the story, Finn and company scored the list, Kaye led the revolt, Nina came to her senses and took over the ship, realizing that her husband continued to fight the Vong on their home planet, setting the stage for the next chapter in this tale.

He doesn’t play a huge role in this story, but Han Solo does make several important appearances throughout INVASION. At the time, he still felt intense loss because of his longtime partner’s death as we saw in STAR WARS: CHEWBACCA. INVASION also featured Chewbacca’s nephew Lowbacca as a Jedi student who even wields a lightsaber in battle. The Wookiee first appeared in the 1995 novel “Young Jedi Knights: Heirs of the Force” by Kevin J. Anderson and Rebecca Moesta. Lowie, as his friends call him, moved on to become an important part of fending off the Yuuzhan Vong invasion.
Next, STAR WARS #28-30 from the original Marvel series features one-off stories starring Han and Chewie, Darth Vader and Princess Leia.
