Among the many, many losses of 2016 was composer Isao Tomita, one of the pioneers of electronic and space music. He worked up until his passing on Dr. Coppelius, a composition based on the story of Coppelius that would feature virtual diva Hatsune Miku as a ballerina. Sadly, plans for the concert were interrupted because of his passing — but tickets were honored and the show eventually went on at a later date.
Now, the NHK has announced a documentary on the late Tomita’s work: NEXT for the Future: Requiem for the Lost Master ~Isao Tomita’s Last Concert~
The documentary will cover the conception, creation, and performance of Dr. Coppelius, which was performed last month in memory of the late composer. The production saw Hatsune Miku getting a ballet-style reimagining, as well as choreography from Cirque du Soleil members.
The documentary, narrated by singer and composer Etsuko Yakushimaru, will air on NHK on Saturday, December 17 at 5:30 PM JST.
