NEW YORK, NY – (June 20, 2016) – After last year’s highly successful inaugural effort which resulted in nearly 20,000 animals finding new homes, the NBCUniversal Owned Television Stations, a division of NBCUniversal, today announced the second annual Clear the Shelters pet adoption campaign will take place on Saturday, July 23. The Clear the Shelters groundbreaking pet adoption campaign will team up more than 40 local NBC and Telemundo television stations with hundreds of animal shelters from all across the country to find new homes for thousands of homeless pets. On this day, participating animal shelters will offer no-cost or reduced fee adoptions or waive pet spaying and neutering fees.
“Clear the Shelters took the nation by storm last year and inspired thousands of families to open their hearts to animals in need. I’m very excited that our stations are working with hundreds of local animal shelters once again to help save the lives of thousands of deserving animals,” said Valari Staab, President, NBCUniversal Owned Television Stations. “Having recently adopted a Puerto Rican rescue dog, I know well how a pet’s love can impact a family. Help us ‘Clear the Shelters’ and let’s make change happen once again to give deserving pets a chance at a new life.”
NBCUniversal’s Owned Television Stations’ nationwide pet adoption effort will feature special shows and programming that will air on local stations before and after the pet adoption drive (check local listings). Each participating local station will also engage local viewers with news and information across various platforms, including on air during local newscasts, online and via social media, to help raise awareness about the actual pet adoption day as well as related animal welfare issues, like the overpopulation of shelters.
Specifically, 11 NBC-owned stations, 17-owned Telemundo stations, the regional news network necn, and more than 20 NBC affiliate stations will team up with more than 300 animal shelters from all across the country and Puerto Rico to participate in the second annual Clear the Shelters pet adoption campaign.
Additionally, Natalie Morales, NBC News’ TODAY West Coast Anchor, and soon-to-be host of Access Hollywood and Access Hollywood Live, will host a 30-minute post-adoption drive special that will recap the previous week’s national day of action. It will air on Friday, July 29 on the NBC Owned Television Stations and elsewhere on more than 120 NBC affiliate stations (check local listings). The Telemundo stations will also air a post-adoption drive show on the same day that will be co-hosted by Stephanie Himonidis “Chiquibaby” and Elva Saray, Hosts of Telemundo 52 Los Angeles’ (KVEA) daily entertainment show, Acceso Total (check local listings).
This year’s Clear the Shelters event comes after last year’s highly successful inaugural effort, which resulted in nearly 20,000 pets finding new homes through an unprecedented partnership between the NBCUniversal Owned Television Stations and 400 animal shelters located all across the country and in Puerto Rico. The nationwide day of action literally emptied dozens of animal shelters across the country and inspired local communities to take action and open their homes to animals in need. Various celebrities and news personalities, including Ellen DeGeneres; Steve Harvey; extra’s Mario Lopez; NBC Nightly News anchor Lester Holt; Bravo’s Andy Cohen; actress Sarah Michelle Gellar, singer and songwriter Rob Thomas; and Telemundo network stars Carmen Villalobos and Sonya Smith among others, joined in Clear the Shelters’ social media effort by posting selfies with their favorite pets.
