CHICAGO, IL – (December 8, 2016) – The Chicago / Midwest Chapter of the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences awarded NBC 5 Chicago / WMAQ and Telemundo Chicago / WSNS eight Emmy® Awards at the 58th Annual Emmy® Awards Gala held on Saturday, December 3rd at the Chicago Marriott in Chicago, Illinois.

NBC 5 received three awards, including the “Outstanding Achievement for News Programming – Morning Newscast.” award.

Telemundo Chicago was honored with five Emmy® awards, including the “Outstanding Achievement for News Programming” award in recognition of the station’s 10 PM newscast that covered the high profile news story, “The Gage Park Massacre Arrests.”

The stations were also honored with an award that recognized the collaborative work of their investigative units, NBC 5 Responds and Telemundo Chicago Responde. With the information the units gathered, the stations aired the story “Policias del Cable/Crackdown or Shake Down?” in English on NBC 5 and in Spanish on Telemundo Chicago that helped several small local businesses, a majority of which were Latino-owned, become aware of the false practices.

NBC 5 Chicago / WMAQ
NBC 5 / WMAQ–TV is the owned NBC station in Chicago. On October 8, 1948, the station, then called WNBQ–TV, transmitted its first telecast from the Merchandise Mart—the third game of the Indians–Braves World Series in Cleveland, Ohio. The station’s current call letters, WMAQ–TV, were established in 1964. During NBC5 Chicago’s rich history, the station pioneered a number of television “firsts.” On April 15, 1956, NBC 5 became the world’s first all–color station. Telemundo Chicago / WSNS is Telemundo’s local television station serving the Spanish–speaking community throughout the Chicago metropolitan area.
