Actors Miki Maya and Atsuro Watabe will be starring in a new detective story television drama called Black Lizard, which is based on the character of the same name from a 1934 novel by celebrated mystery author Edogawa Rampo.
Miki Maya will play the titular Black Lizard, a murderous crime queen who loves beautiful things and whose escapades include stealing priceless jewels and kidnapping attractive people. Rather than playing the eccentric detective Kogoro Akechi, Black Lizard’s traditional nemesis, Atsuro Watabe will be playing a brilliant deputy commissioner who pursues Black Lizard. The story will be updated to fit a modern setting.
The character of Black Lizard has previously appeared in the 1968 Black Lizard live-action film directed by Kinji Fukasaku, where she was portrayed by Akihiro Maruyama. Black Lizard also appears in the 2015 TV anime Rampo Kitan: Game of Laplace, where she is voiced by Yōko Hikasa.
Black Lizard is directed by Kazumasa Nemoto and features screenplays by Masaki Fukasawa. The series premieres on Fuji TV on December 22, 2015, at 9:00 PM JST. The series will also play on Kansai TV.
