Marvel Halloween Spooklight 2015 Day 20: Marvel Zombies

Every day this month a new supernatural character or story from the Marvel Universe gets the spooky spotlight leading up to Halloween!

The Marvel Zombies Universe may have launched in the pages of ULTIMATE FANTASTIC FOUR, but it soon turned into its own franchise, spawning more sequels and spinoffs than, well, a respectable undead outbreak.

One such entry happens to be the wildly appropriate MARVEL ZOMBIES HALLOWEEN one-shot from 2012 written by Fred Van Lente and drawn by Alessandro Vitti.

This terror tale set in a world over run by zombies both human and super human follows the misadventures of a boy named Peter who lives with his mom on a farm they keep well protected from the ever-present horde. In addition to his father, one of this world’s many casualties includes holidays like Halloween.

Wanting to get in on the festivities, which become aided by the appearance of a black cat they take on as a pet, Peter dresses up in a Wolverine costume and wants to go trick or treating. His mom understandably says no, but that doesn’t stop little Peter from chasing the cat through town after it escapes.Marvel Halloween Spooklight 2015 Day 20: Marvel Zombies

Along the way he meets a mysteriously uninfected old man before the likes of Darkhawk, Lucy in the Sky, Mettle, Alex Power, and Squirrel Girl descend upon him. Luckily, Peter’s mom not only knows how to handle herself, but also has secret powers! The duo also greatly benefit from the appearance of Mephisto—the old man Peter previously met—who takes no joy from a world filled with the shambled, hungry dead.

Once back at the house, the truth is revealed: Peter’s mom is Kitty Pryde and the father he talks about throughout the story turns out to be Piotr Rasputin, otherwise known as Colossus.

In the end, it makes huge amounts of sense that the phasing X-Man previously known as Shadowcat would survive in this kind of scenario. Add in some of that tactical training from Wolverine and her time as a S.H.I.E.L.D. agent and you have a nearly unstoppable survivor.

FRIGHT FACT: Fred Van Lente penned many of the Marvel Zombies stories including MARVEL ZOMBIES 4 which stars Spooklight favorites Morbius the Living Vampire, Werewolf by Night, Daimon Hellstrom, Jennifer Kale, and Man-Thing. This group, dubbed the Midnight Sons, did a solid job cleaning up the zombie plague, but the machinations of Dormammu and Zombie Deadpool kept this from becoming a nice, happy ending. Then again, what else would you expect from a book called “Marvel Zombies”?

Come back tomorrow for another Halloween Spooklight on INFERNAL MAN-THING!
