Japan Box Office: No New Anime Films Make Top 10 Debut

There were three new anime films opened in Japan in the last weekend of August: Madhouse’s original film Kimi no Koe wo Todoketai (57 theaters), Silver Link’s Fate/kaleid liner Prisma Illya: Oath Under Snow (17 theaters), and Studio Comet’s Cute High Earth Defense Club LOVE! LOVE! LOVE! (8 theaters/OVA episode). But none of them made top 10 debut in their opening weekend, and their first weekend gross have not yet been reported. In Pia’s first day satisfaction ranking, Prisma Illya ranked 7th (90.0 rating), Kimi no Koe in 8th (88.5).

Meanwhile, ex-Studio Ghibli director Hiromasa Yonebayashi (The Secret World of Arrietty, When Marnie Was There)’s new anime feature film Mary to Mahou no Hana/Mary and The Witch’s Flower is confirmed to earn over three billion yen by its 8th weekend. It is expected to end its domestic run with around 3.5 billion yen, almost same result with When Marnie Was There in 2014.
