Gegege no Kitaro creator Shigeru Mizuki spent his life both creating spooky manga and chronicling stories of both yokai and Japanese history. This week, on the anniversary of his death, Mizuki Productions has begun running Mr. Shigeru Mizuki and Me, a fictionalized account of the life of the creator.
At Mizuki’s side in the manga is Fukasawa, his (fictional) personal assistant of the last 40 years, based on Mizuki Pro’s chief assistant. The story sees the pair working side by side, both at home and abroad in Europe and Bali. The manga also weaves in memories of Mizuki’s personality from his coworkers.
The manga is being published as part of Kadokawa’s monster-themed imprint KWAI, for which Mizuki was a contributor until his death.
Coming out alongside it is Gegege no Musume Nikki, an essay by Mizuki’s daughter Etsuko. She has previously written similar memoires for the book Gegege no Musume, Rerere no Musume, Lalala no Musume alongside the daughters of Fujio Akatsuka and Osamu Tezuka.
