“Fushigi Yugi” Stage Musical Continues With a Mysterious Sequel Play

Fushigi Yugi, a shōjo manga by Yuu Watase about a girl who embarks on a magical and romantic adventure in a world similar to mythological China, is once more being adapted into a stage musical with a sequel play entitled Fushigi Yugi -Ao no Shou- (“Blue Chapter”) that will run from October 13 – 21, 2018, at the Zenrosai Hall / Space zero venue in Shibuya, Tokyo, Japan.

The play serves as a direct sequel to the 2016 Fushigi Yugi -Aka no Shou- stage musical, and Reina Tanaka (pictured above) and Ryō Hirano (pictured below) are confirmed to reprise their roles as lead characers Miaka Yūki and Tamahome, respectively. The play is directed by Sayaka Asai of the musical company One on One and is produced by Attractive Media Partners.

The original Fushigi Yugi manga was serialized from 1992 – 1996 in Shogakukan’s Shōjo Comic magazine. The series was also adapted into a 1995 – 1996 TV anime with direction by Hajime Kamegaki and animation by Studio Pierrot. The Fushigi Yugi TV anime is available via streaming on Crunchyroll, who describe the story as follows:

Miaka, a junior high school student in Tokyo, has normal problems: fights with her mom, entrance exams, and deciding where she’s going to go eat with her friends. But when she finds a mysterious book in the library, her life is changed forever when she and her best friend are transported inside!
