Every Dog Will Have His Day in Live-Action “Kakegurui” TV Drama

A live-action TV drama based on Kakegurui, a high stakes high school gambling manga written by Homura Kawamoto and illustrated by Toru Naomura, is coming to the “Drama-ism” late night programming block on TBS and MBS in January of 2018, and now the new show has revealed its 2nd main cast member: actor Mahiro Takasugi plays the luckless but well-meaning student, Ryōta Suzui.

A photoshoot features Takasugi in costume and make-up as both Ryōta Suzui and as Ryōta’s role as “Pochi” (“Spot”), the “pet” of Mary Saotome. Commenting on his work, Takasugi observed that playing Ryōta Suzui was very different from any of his previous roles, and that the cast and crew were running him ragged as “Pochi” from the first day of shooting.

The live-action Kakegurui TV series is directed by Tsutomu Hanabusa (Heroine ShikkakuAsahinagu), and it will air on MBS on Sundays during the 24:50 time slot (actually at 12:50 AM JST on Monday morning) beginning on January 14, 2018, and on TBS on Tuesdays during the 25:28 time slot (actually at 1:28 AM JST on Wednesday morning) beginning on January 16, 2018.

The original Kakegurui manga is published in Square Enix’s Monthly Gangan Joker shōnen manga magazine. An English language version of the original Kakegurui manga is available from Yen Press under the title Kakegurui – Compulsive Gambler. Yen Press describes the story of Kakegurui as follows:

Hyakkaou Private Academy. An institution for the privileged with a very peculiar curriculum. You see, when you’re the sons and daughters of the wealthiest of the wealthy, it’s not athletic prowess or book smarts that keep you ahead. It’s reading your opponent-the art of the deal. What better way to hone those skills than with a rigorous curriculum of gambling?

At Hyakkaou Private Academy, the winners live like kings, and the losers
are put through the wringer. But when Yumeko Jabami enrolls, she’s gonna teach these kids what a high roller really looks like!
