When last we saw Pepper, a companionship robot developed by Softbank and Aldebaran Robotics, it was attempting to blend in with the Halloween celebrations in Ikebukuro, but now it appears there is no more need for stealth in the cute robot’s bid for world domination.
According to a press release from Softbank, the most recent batch of Pepper robots – a production run of 1000 units that went on sale at 10:00 AM JST on November 28, 2015 – sold out within one minute of the sale going live.
This means that either the demand for Pepper is truly mind-boggling, or that MACHINES CAPABLE OF LIGHTNING-FAST INTERNET PURCHASES ARE BUYING OTHER MACHINES!!! Great Caesar’s Ghost, they’re multiplying!
Softbank notes that the next batch of Pepper robots will go on sale on December 26, 2015 at 10:00 AM JST. Pepper ranges in price from 198,000 yen ($1612.31 US) plus tax for the basic robot and software package to 1,083,600 yen ($8823.75 US) plus tax for a premium package that includes insurance, repairs, and a Cloud-based conversation subscription service.
