The Sixth Gun: Dust to Dust #2 is out today, including another Lil’ Sixth Gun strip by Cat Farris!
Learn more about Cat Farris and her role in The Sixth Gun universe, as well as what it feels like to draw a chibi General Hume in this interview:
What has The Sixth Gun meant to you and how would you entice new readers to try it?
not much of a “Wild West” story person. I don’t readily reach for
things in that genre, regardless of what they are. However, we almost
always have a pile of comics sitting on the lunch table at Periscope,
and I like to read through them while I’m eating. I’m pretty sure I
grabbed an issue of Sixth Gun imply because I’d heard people talking
about how great it was supposed to be. I had no idea it was going to
become my next favorite comic. There is something about Sixth
Gun that feels like it was made just for me, even though that’s
obviously not the case. Maybe it has something to do with Becky. She’s
the kind of character I’ve always wanted to see in comics, and she feels
very real to me and that helps to pull me in each issue. But of course
it isn’t just Becky. All the characters are so, so good. Even if we
don’t see them a lot, they all feel like they are complex, real people,
with their own motives and such, and that’s so important to me. It’s not
something I feel is true for a lot of the stuff out there today.
would say if you haven’t read it yet, pick up the first trade and give
it a try. Don’t just get the first issue, trust me. You’re going to want
the whole first trade. So much happens in that first arc that really
gives you a good taste of the kind of things you can expect later on,
and I can’t imagine anyone getting to the end of it and not wanting
How fun was it to play with the world of The Sixth Gun and make it adorably cute?
love Brian’s art so much. And Bill’s colors. It’s a lot to live up to.
So at first it was really intimidating to think about taking these
characters that are so familiar to me already and trying to make them
into something that was more “mine”, but still definitely recognizable
as Sixth Gun. I also really wanted to create something that the team
would be proud of. It is really a weird experience to handle someone
else’s characters when so much has been established already. But the
more I started drawing and playing around with them, the more excited I
got, and I started to have a ton of fun. This the first comic project
where someone has asked me explicitly to be myself, and do what I think
is fun. It’s a huge honor for me, and I love it. I think my favorite
part is taking characters that aren’t at all meant to be cute, and
situations that aren’t meant to be cute, and then making them cute
anyway. It’s a fun challenge, and I love seeing the way people react to
Which character are you most excited to depict?
I am really hoping that I get to draw Nidawi at some point. She is fast becoming one of my favorite characters!
I was super terrified to draw General Hume for this most recent page. I
had no idea how he was going to translate into the “chibi” universe,
but he ended up being super fun to draw. I really felt like I could go
all out with him because he’s so gross and crazy.
