“Akira” Author Katsuhiro Otomo Illustrates Poster for “Isle of Dogs”

Manga author Katsuhiro Otomo (AkiraDomu) has teamed up with the Japanese theatrical release of Isle of Dogs, the latest stop-motion animation film by director Wes Anderson, in a collaboration that features an original movie poster illustrated by Otomo.

Commenting on the collaboration, Otomo observed that he felt it would be difficult to add anything new to Anderson’s vision of the film, which was already a “perfect world” filled with visual and musical homages to Japanese cinema. Otomo decided to imagine the titular “Isle of Dogs” as a traditional Japanese dog, while the traditional Japanese wooden flooring represents the ocean.

Isle of Dogs hits Japanese theaters on May 25, 2018. The film is known as Inugashima in Japan.
